creating a swan in procreate- episode 4

video - Episode 4

In today's video chat, we discuss drawing a swan in Procreate and how creating a feeling for your artwork is essential, and that feeling you want to convey is your inspiration for the illustration.

For this swan drawing in Procreate, I wanted her to have a botanical feel to this non-traditional holiday design. So I imagined her in a sugar plum fairy forest and getting ready for a holiday party surrounded by plants and flowers, hinting at her location in a fairy forest.

Having a story in mind when you create your artwork helps guide you when creating artwork to capture the place that centers around the story you are telling.

Drawing A Swan in Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.540 --> 00:00:02.620

    I am Denise Palmer

    00:00:02.840 --> 00:00:04.180

    And I am an illustrator,

    00:00:04.240 --> 00:00:09.180

    artist and surface pattern designer working out of my studio close to the

    00:00:09.180 --> 00:00:12.660

    Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and botanical

    00:00:12.660 --> 00:00:13.493

    Plants

    00:00:13.540 --> 00:00:14.540

    Surround my everyday life.

    00:00:15.090 --> 00:00:19.100

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.100 --> 00:00:23.340

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art,

    00:00:23.400 --> 00:00:26.540

    And design. In this time-lapse video,

    00:00:27.020 --> 00:00:30.220

    I am illustrating a Christmas swan in procreate,

    00:00:31.040 --> 00:00:35.820

    and I imagined her living in a sugar plum fairy forest surrounded by

    00:00:35.820 --> 00:00:38.540

    magical fairies and botanical florals,

    00:00:39.320 --> 00:00:44.100

    and it is a holiday design using non-traditional colors since there

    00:00:44.100 --> 00:00:46.060

    will be oranges and plum colors.

    00:00:47.260 --> 00:00:52.260

    I wanted to decorate her with a golden necklace and headpiece as she was

    00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:55.540

    all dressed up for one of the many fairy holiday parties.

    00:00:57.020 --> 00:00:58.170

    While sketching her,

    00:00:58.410 --> 00:01:03.210

    I knew I wanted to keep her simple but elegant and that her body

    00:01:03.210 --> 00:01:07.450

    would have gold monoline accents to give her a gilded look.

    00:01:08.580 --> 00:01:13.060

    I loved creating this swan for a holiday design because

    00:01:13.890 --> 00:01:14.780

    it's, you know,

    00:01:14.840 --> 00:01:19.820

    not something that you traditionally see in Christmas decor because

    00:01:20.200 --> 00:01:21.033

    you're always,

    00:01:21.800 --> 00:01:26.140

    you always see like Santas and reindeer and things like that,

    00:01:26.400 --> 00:01:29.700

    and so it was fun to try something different.

    00:01:30.580 --> 00:01:35.260

    I might have to paint her on an ornament someday because I had

    00:01:35.640 --> 00:01:37.020

    so much fun creating her.

    00:01:38.020 --> 00:01:42.700

    I added some flower details that look as if she collected them from the

    00:01:42.900 --> 00:01:46.520

    surrounding forest. I think it's important to real,

    00:01:46.620 --> 00:01:48.800

    to think about as you're creating artwork,

    00:01:49.350 --> 00:01:54.240

    what kind of feel you want for your design. For me,

    00:01:54.240 --> 00:01:58.920

    because I had the idea of her being in a

    00:01:58.970 --> 00:02:00.480

    sugar plum fairy forest,

    00:02:01.220 --> 00:02:05.360

    it really helped inspire me to create

    00:02:05.950 --> 00:02:10.640

    that kind of feel and I really imagined it having quite a

    00:02:10.640 --> 00:02:11.840

    botanical look to it.

    00:02:12.540 --> 00:02:17.320

    And so the plants that I chose to add to the overall finish

    00:02:17.380 --> 00:02:21.000

    design, which I'm gonna show you here in just a, just a second,

    00:02:21.900 --> 00:02:26.880

    it really helped me focus in on that as I was creating the

    00:02:26.880 --> 00:02:27.713

    artwork.

    00:02:27.860 --> 00:02:32.760

    And I create all the elements that go into the finished design separately

    00:02:32.940 --> 00:02:37.120

    and procreate, and then I assemble them in Adobe Photoshop.

    00:02:37.700 --> 00:02:42.360

    And here is the finished pattern design I created with the swan

    00:02:42.580 --> 00:02:46.240

    and the rest of the artwork that I drew in Procreate.

    00:02:47.190 --> 00:02:49.600

    Because I love this color palette so much,

    00:02:50.120 --> 00:02:54.840

    I am also sharing the procreate color palette that I use for this design because

    00:02:55.100 --> 00:02:56.640

    it is one of my favorites.

    00:02:56.780 --> 00:03:00.960

    And I thought you would enjoy creating your own artwork with this collection.

    00:03:01.010 --> 00:03:05.840

    Color collection too. The link to get the color palette is below this video.

    00:03:07.040 --> 00:03:10.360

    I will be sharing more process videos, so be sure to
