creating canberra bells in procreate- episode 5

video - Episode 5

In today's video chat, we discussed drawing Canberra Bell flowers in Procreate and making the flowers cascade down from each other and how background color effects your color choices.

When drawing artwork in Procreate for a project, it is crucial to know the background color when filling in your artwork with color. The color does not have to be exact, as you can change your mind later, but it should be close to the background color you plan to use.

Think ahead when illustrating in color in Procreate so that the colors you chose now will work on the background colors you want in your finished design.

Canberra Bells in Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.600 --> 00:00:04.240

    I am Denise Palmer, and I am an illustrator,

    00:00:04.260 --> 00:00:09.040

    artist and surface pattern designer working out of my studio close

    00:00:09.060 --> 00:00:13.880

    to the Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and botanical plants surround

    00:00:13.900 --> 00:00:14.760

    my everyday life.

    00:00:15.270 --> 00:00:19.480

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.480 --> 00:00:24.200

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and design.

    00:00:25.420 --> 00:00:30.040

    In this TimeLapse video, I'm creating these Canberra Bells in procreate,

    00:00:30.460 --> 00:00:35.200

    and I also have a list of the procreate brushes that I used in the

    00:00:35.200 --> 00:00:36.760

    description below. This video,

    00:00:37.700 --> 00:00:42.400

    as well as the procreate color palette for these flowers are also below the

    00:00:42.400 --> 00:00:43.233

    video.

    00:00:44.950 --> 00:00:49.730

    As I was creating the flower sketch for these bells,

    00:00:50.570 --> 00:00:54.450

    I had sketched multiple plants in the same procreate document,

    00:00:54.830 --> 00:00:59.730

    and you can see some faded out leaves behind the bells sketch that I'm

    00:00:59.730 --> 00:01:00.563

    working on.

    00:01:01.060 --> 00:01:04.810

    These flowers are so pretty and I loved their bell shape,

    00:01:05.190 --> 00:01:08.130

    so I wanted to make them cascade down from each other.

    00:01:09.710 --> 00:01:11.570

    The bells are native to Australia,

    00:01:11.910 --> 00:01:13.970

    and since I was working on an Australian project,

    00:01:14.400 --> 00:01:16.610

    that is why I was creating these flowers.

    00:01:17.780 --> 00:01:21.100

    I knew I wanted the background to be darker for the end project,

    00:01:21.800 --> 00:01:26.060

    so I made the background darker here so I could really see how the colors would

    00:01:26.060 --> 00:01:29.260

    look as I was filling in the plant with color,

    00:01:30.590 --> 00:01:33.710

    I try to think about the end project and what the background will look like

    00:01:33.940 --> 00:01:38.590

    because the color that you use behind the artwork has a real impact

    00:01:38.730 --> 00:01:42.230

    on the look of the artwork and how the colors play off each other,

    00:01:42.850 --> 00:01:45.150

    so you need to take that into consideration.

    00:01:46.260 --> 00:01:50.790

    Most of the time you are not using a white background because white is very

    00:01:50.840 --> 00:01:54.390

    stark, so I typically avoid all white backgrounds.

    00:01:55.440 --> 00:01:56.610

    Even when I'm sketching.

    00:01:56.890 --> 00:02:00.370

    I like to sketch on an off-white or light gray background.

    00:02:00.750 --> 00:02:04.210

    The softer background is much easier on your eyes too.

    00:02:05.500 --> 00:02:07.380

    I want to encourage you to think ahead,

    00:02:07.730 --> 00:02:09.700

    even when you are creating your illustrations,

    00:02:10.050 --> 00:02:14.620

    that will be in a bigger finished product to really think about the

    00:02:14.620 --> 00:02:19.060

    background color you will be using because it helps to get a feel for your

    00:02:19.260 --> 00:02:21.300

    finished work. That being said,

    00:02:21.440 --> 00:02:25.580

    you do not have to be completely committed to the background color you are

    00:02:25.740 --> 00:02:27.100

    choosing while illustrating,

    00:02:27.800 --> 00:02:32.580

    as you can change it as the artwork evolves into what you are envisioning.

    00:02:38.050 --> 00:02:42.620

    Here is a pattern design that I created with all of the artwork for this custom

    00:02:42.620 --> 00:02:45.700

    project for my client for his Apple Arcade game.

    00:02:46.240 --> 00:02:50.300

    You can find the link to that project below this video if you wanna check it

    00:02:50.300 --> 00:02:53.980

    out. I will be sharing more process videos,
