Illustrating Feathered Pegasus Wings In Procreate - Episode 12

video - Episode 12

In this episode, I am talking all about illustrating a Pegasus in Procreate, and this one is a full process timelapse video where you can see how I am creating the wings and details for this horse in Procreate.

This illustration was created for a custom pattern design project for one of my clients, and you can see the project it was made for here if you want to check it out.

Not all of my patterns have this much detail, but my approach for this pattern design was to have it look like something you would read in a storybook.

I wanted to tell the story of what goes on around Olympus, which is why there is a lot of detail.

For the game I was creating this for, I wanted to immerse the players into this world as they were playing and transport them to this place.

This artwork was created during the height of the pandemic, and we were all stuck in our homes, so it was a big deal to me to give the game players a pattern and an experience.

Pegasus Feathered Wings in Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.540 --> 00:00:06.260

    I am Denise Palmer and I am an illustrator artist and surface pattern designer

    00:00:06.570 --> 00:00:11.300

    working outta my studio close to the Gulf of Mexico where water

    00:00:11.300 --> 00:00:14.540

    adventures and botanical plants surround my everyday life.

    00:00:15.090 --> 00:00:19.100

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:19.100 --> 00:00:23.980

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and design.

    00:00:25.950 --> 00:00:26.783

    In this video,

    00:00:27.130 --> 00:00:31.890

    I illustrated a Pegasus in procreate for a custom illustration commission

    00:00:32.430 --> 00:00:36.970

    for a client. This was a past project that I completed quite a few years ago,

    00:00:37.590 --> 00:00:41.650

    but I had this great footage of working on it that I wanted to share with you.

    00:00:42.840 --> 00:00:47.620

    The Peggy Si. I created for a pattern design for Greece as the inspiration,

    00:00:48.440 --> 00:00:52.900

    so I focused on Greek gods and the idea of Mount Olympus.

    00:00:54.080 --> 00:00:58.900

    The pattern design that I created from this artwork I will share with you at

    00:00:59.020 --> 00:01:03.340

    the end of this video, but I named the design Olympus Odyssey.

    00:01:03.480 --> 00:01:06.060

    To give you an idea of where I'm going with the design,

    00:01:07.200 --> 00:01:11.440

    I created this illustration before I found my favorite sketching brush,

    00:01:12.020 --> 00:01:16.280

    and for this drawing I used the standard six B pencil in procreate

    00:01:17.370 --> 00:01:21.890

    Everything starts out as a sketch and goes through my layered sketching process.

    00:01:23.030 --> 00:01:27.890

    My layered sketching process includes three layers that I put on top of

    00:01:27.890 --> 00:01:30.250

    each other. I start out with a rough sketch,

    00:01:30.840 --> 00:01:33.930

    then I create what is what I call a refined sketch,

    00:01:34.110 --> 00:01:38.010

    and then I get to the final sketch, which is a working sketch.

    00:01:38.850 --> 00:01:43.780

    Sometimes I get to the sketch that I want in the second sketch and sometimes

    00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:48.300

    it takes three sketches to get the artwork to where I want it to be.

    00:01:50.530 --> 00:01:52.870

    If I don't like something that I drew in the sketch,

    00:01:53.390 --> 00:01:57.670

    I sometimes will cut it out and edit it until it feels right to me.

    00:01:58.750 --> 00:02:03.510

    I like to flip my canvas as well when I am sketching so that I can see the

    00:02:03.510 --> 00:02:05.070

    sketch from another perspective.

    00:02:05.820 --> 00:02:10.540

    It's easier to spot areas that need improvement this way and this

    00:02:10.570 --> 00:02:12.180

    Pegasus started out really rough,

    00:02:12.520 --> 00:02:16.180

    but I got the working sketch to a point that I was happy with.

    00:02:18.010 --> 00:02:19.380

    Once I had the sketch finished,

    00:02:19.570 --> 00:02:22.980

    then I started working on the local color fills for the body.

    00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:28.610

    This is my favorite part after finishing a sketch is getting to bring it to life

    00:02:28.670 --> 00:02:29.503

    in color.

    00:02:30.330 --> 00:02:35.050

    I already knew that I wanted to use creamy colors like off whites and

    00:02:35.120 --> 00:02:40.090

    tote for this Pegasus since even though it was a detailed part

    00:02:40.090 --> 00:02:44.850

    of the design, it was not the main focus of the pattern that I will be creating.

    00:02:45.990 --> 00:02:49.770

    As I follow along the body, I'm deciding what parts will have this color,

    00:02:50.350 --> 00:02:52.170

    the legs that are further away.

    00:02:52.570 --> 00:02:57.570

    I will make a darker color to emphasize the separation in the legs and give

    00:02:57.570 --> 00:03:01.770

    some depth even though I'm adding these colors.

    00:03:02.490 --> 00:03:06.730

    Remember they are a starting point and you can always adjust and change the

    00:03:06.730 --> 00:03:10.690

    color later if you want to lighten or darken your base local colors.

    00:03:11.590 --> 00:03:16.520

    Something else that I find very helpful is to add to your illustration

    00:03:16.780 --> 00:03:21.480

    and then zoom out from your procreate canvas to get a better overall

    00:03:21.480 --> 00:03:25.920

    perspective of your changes. You may notice that I do this a lot.

    00:03:27.430 --> 00:03:29.880

    It's just because it's works for me.

    00:03:31.190 --> 00:03:35.600

    Here I am adding in the local colors for all the main parts of the Pegasus,

    00:03:35.910 --> 00:03:37.600

    like the body which I've finished,

    00:03:37.900 --> 00:03:42.800

    the back legs and the main and tail hair of the

    00:03:42.970 --> 00:03:46.800

    horse, and then the wings will get their own color too.

    00:03:47.820 --> 00:03:51.280

    As I am working, I do my best to name all of my layers as I go,

    00:03:51.740 --> 00:03:54.160

    but if I am in the flow of working,

    00:03:54.470 --> 00:03:58.440

    sometimes I just create the layer and then go back and name them properly.

    00:03:59.410 --> 00:04:01.360

    Especially when you are in flow,

    00:04:01.880 --> 00:04:06.480

    I usually stick to staying in it and not letting like the little things

    00:04:06.840 --> 00:04:10.070

    distract me. If you are wondering what flow is,

    00:04:10.250 --> 00:04:15.230

    it is that state where time seems to melt away around you as

    00:04:15.230 --> 00:04:16.063

    you are working,

    00:04:16.610 --> 00:04:20.590

    you are deep in the moment and utterly focused on the task at hand.

    00:04:21.290 --> 00:04:26.150

    You move through the tasks much easier and what you need to do feels very

    00:04:26.150 --> 00:04:29.590

    natural to you and your intuition takes over.

    00:04:30.370 --> 00:04:31.430

    At this point,

    00:04:31.510 --> 00:04:35.590

    I like to turn off my sketch and go back through the layers I just created and

    00:04:35.590 --> 00:04:36.423

    clean things up.

    00:04:37.500 --> 00:04:41.540

    I do this by switching between the eraser brush and the regular brush as I move

    00:04:41.540 --> 00:04:45.230

    around my procreate canvas. If you turn off your sketch,

    00:04:45.290 --> 00:04:50.190

    it makes it easier to see where you need to clean things up in procreate,

    00:04:50.850 --> 00:04:55.310

    but I also like to clean up my artwork as well in Adobe

    00:04:55.310 --> 00:04:58.350

    Photoshop when I bring my artwork in there.

    00:04:58.930 --> 00:05:00.790

    But for this particular illustration,

    00:05:01.310 --> 00:05:05.710

    I felt that I needed to go ahead and do a lot of cleanup ahead of time

    00:05:06.370 --> 00:05:11.150

    and it just depends on your workflow and how you um,

    00:05:11.450 --> 00:05:14.190

    end up using the artwork. In the in at the end.

    00:05:16.340 --> 00:05:21.230

    Part of cleanup also included adding any texture for this

    00:05:21.560 --> 00:05:25.390

    horse. I wanted to have a textured edge to the artwork,

    00:05:25.890 --> 00:05:30.790

    so I'm using the six B pencil again and this is the standard procreate

    00:05:30.790 --> 00:05:35.030

    brush and I went along the edges of my artwork to add in texture.

    00:05:35.940 --> 00:05:37.710

    This was a little time consuming,

    00:05:37.850 --> 00:05:42.710

    but I felt worth it in the end for the effort to get that textured

    00:05:42.780 --> 00:05:43.870

    edge to the artwork.

    00:05:45.030 --> 00:05:48.110

    I could have used the textured brush to begin with,

    00:05:48.290 --> 00:05:53.190

    but textured brushes when filling in color can leave gaps that you have to fill

    00:05:53.190 --> 00:05:57.720

    in anyways because of the texture. And this is the method that works for me.

    00:05:58.550 --> 00:06:03.400

    Plus it gives me the opportunity to make any other last adjustments to

    00:06:03.400 --> 00:06:04.880

    the edges of the artwork as well.

    00:06:06.170 --> 00:06:10.990

    Now that I have all the base local colors in place for all the elements of

    00:06:11.330 --> 00:06:12.230

    my Pegasus,

    00:06:12.990 --> 00:06:16.510

    I like to also make adjustments to the background color on my canvas.

    00:06:17.330 --> 00:06:22.310

    The color I'm using here is very close to what the overall background color

    00:06:22.370 --> 00:06:26.590

    in the finished pattern design will be. Though there are variations,

    00:06:26.770 --> 00:06:31.710

    but it is a darker navy color for the ocean and I that I plan to use.

    00:06:32.610 --> 00:06:36.910

    Adding in a background color that is close to what the background color will

    00:06:36.910 --> 00:06:41.670

    look like in your finished piece is important as the background color

    00:06:41.930 --> 00:06:46.830

    has an effect on what the colors you choose in your illustration and how they

    00:06:46.830 --> 00:06:48.990

    will look together and play off each other.

    00:06:49.770 --> 00:06:54.540

    Now it is time to add some depth to the colors that

    00:06:54.680 --> 00:06:59.380

    we have already put in place, and I usually like to work on the shadows first.

    00:06:59.720 --> 00:07:04.020

    So I'm starting out with body shadows for my Pegasus horse

    00:07:05.190 --> 00:07:06.420

    going around his body.

    00:07:06.860 --> 00:07:11.300

    I am using the shadows to define areas that would be in shadow and most

    00:07:11.860 --> 00:07:12.980

    lighting situations.

    00:07:13.960 --> 00:07:18.700

    I'm not going too detailed on light and shadow because this is a pattern element

    00:07:19.080 --> 00:07:22.260

    and he will be facing several different directions,

    00:07:22.680 --> 00:07:27.500

    but a general light is sufficient here since he is flying outside,

    00:07:27.670 --> 00:07:32.660

    there will be a shadow under his hair and belly as well as the body decorations

    00:07:32.660 --> 00:07:35.220

    that I will be adding in later. Also,

    00:07:35.480 --> 00:07:40.220

    I'm establishing the shadows for it now since I'm already working on shadows.

    00:07:40.920 --> 00:07:44.220

    If I don't like these shadows, I can always adjust them later.

    00:07:46.730 --> 00:07:48.630

    At this point in the drawing process,

    00:07:49.310 --> 00:07:54.270

    I am starting to want to add more details to his face so I begin to work on

    00:07:54.270 --> 00:07:59.070

    that next face details really start to make your illustrations come

    00:07:59.070 --> 00:08:02.430

    alive and at this point I was needing to get those in place.

    00:08:03.580 --> 00:08:06.150

    This Pegasus is focused on getting somewhere,

    00:08:06.370 --> 00:08:11.270

    so I had him looking forward in where he was going in

    00:08:11.270 --> 00:08:15.230

    mid-flight. He ends up looking quite serious in the end,

    00:08:15.650 --> 00:08:19.670

    but it's okay. It ends up working out and it's uh,

    00:08:19.850 --> 00:08:23.350

    an a serious kind of piece. So that's, so it worked.

    00:08:24.720 --> 00:08:28.730

    Once I get his face started, I decided to deepen the shadows more.

    00:08:29.830 --> 00:08:33.410

    Now that I'm happy with how his body and features are coming together,

    00:08:34.030 --> 00:08:36.130

    it was time to move on to his wings.

    00:08:37.740 --> 00:08:41.680

    The wings were the part that I was most excited about working on,

    00:08:42.020 --> 00:08:44.800

    so I really had fun working on his wings.

    00:08:45.580 --> 00:08:50.080

    If you know you may need some motivation at any time during

    00:08:50.660 --> 00:08:51.840

    the illustrating process,

    00:08:52.790 --> 00:08:57.720

    save the most exciting part for where you will need that motivation the most.

    00:08:58.540 --> 00:09:00.560

    So for example, if you are struggling,

    00:09:00.570 --> 00:09:02.800

    struggling with getting started on something,

    00:09:03.250 --> 00:09:07.440

    start with the part that you are most excited about first to get the ball

    00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:11.320

    rolling if you can and if it works to do it that way.

    00:09:12.540 --> 00:09:15.600

    Or if you have motivation for an illustration already,

    00:09:16.150 --> 00:09:20.080

    save the part you are most excited about. For around the halfway point,

    00:09:20.450 --> 00:09:21.680

    which is what I did here,

    00:09:22.730 --> 00:09:26.830

    the halfway point is sometimes like this is the point where I might have gotten

    00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:31.470

    tired and needed a kick in the pants or well, in my case,

    00:09:31.930 --> 00:09:35.550

    my yoga pants. Getting that motivation halfway through,

    00:09:35.890 --> 00:09:39.030

    it really helps you get to the finish line.

    00:09:39.730 --> 00:09:41.750

    So for this particular illustration,

    00:09:42.030 --> 00:09:45.110

    I finished this all in one day over several hours,

    00:09:45.690 --> 00:09:48.630

    but I took breaks and when I say breaks,

    00:09:49.090 --> 00:09:54.030

    it could be a day or two that you may need and and not be able to complete it

    00:09:54.130 --> 00:09:59.030

    in one day. You should definitely stop when you are tired and need the break

    00:10:00.850 --> 00:10:01.683

    for the wings.

    00:10:01.790 --> 00:10:06.750

    I knew I wanted them to have a lighter color to them and be a little bit

    00:10:06.750 --> 00:10:07.990

    more on the gray side,

    00:10:08.810 --> 00:10:13.070

    and I also wanted them to have a feathery look to them as well.

    00:10:14.610 --> 00:10:16.390

    So I used the oriental brush,

    00:10:16.810 --> 00:10:21.430

    and this is a standard procreate brush that I liked the look of for

    00:10:21.790 --> 00:10:24.030

    creating a feathered edge to the wings.

    00:10:26.210 --> 00:10:28.220

    Once I got the highlights on the wings,

    00:10:28.500 --> 00:10:32.260

    I added in some other colors to add variation to the feathers.

    00:10:32.930 --> 00:10:36.220

    Some feathers are below and some are a different color,

    00:10:36.600 --> 00:10:39.380

    but this detail adds a sense of realism to it,

    00:10:39.770 --> 00:10:42.020

    even though this is a flying animal.

    00:10:44.830 --> 00:10:46.600

    Once I got the first wing done,

    00:10:47.160 --> 00:10:50.880

    I started on the back wing by repeating the process for that one,

    00:10:51.340 --> 00:10:55.080

    but I add in deeper shadowing for the back of this wing.

    00:10:55.830 --> 00:11:00.440

    This gives some depth to the wings and separation

    00:11:00.440 --> 00:11:04.040

    between the front wing and the one in the back.

    00:11:05.890 --> 00:11:10.770

    I also add in the feathered edge with my oriental

    00:11:10.770 --> 00:11:15.730

    brush as well and add in some hairline details with

    00:11:15.990 --> 00:11:20.890

    the six B pencil to keep the same edging as the front

    00:11:20.890 --> 00:11:21.723

    wing.

    00:11:22.730 --> 00:11:27.570

    I also flip my canvas so that I can look at the wings

    00:11:27.600 --> 00:11:32.330

    from another perspective so that I can make any adjustments

    00:11:32.560 --> 00:11:37.010

    that I feel is necessary to finish out the wings.

    00:11:37.630 --> 00:11:40.450

    Not all of my patterns have this much detail,

    00:11:40.990 --> 00:11:45.170

    but my approach for this pattern design was to have it look like something you

    00:11:45.170 --> 00:11:46.850

    would read in a storybook.

    00:11:47.810 --> 00:11:51.610

    I wanted to tell the story of what goes on around Olympus,

    00:11:52.220 --> 00:11:57.160

    which is why there is a lot of detail for the game I was creating this

    00:11:57.180 --> 00:11:57.800

    for.

    00:11:57.800 --> 00:12:02.320

    I wanted to immerse the players into this world as they were playing and

    00:12:02.720 --> 00:12:04.120

    transport them to this place.

    00:12:05.230 --> 00:12:08.880

    This was during the height of the pandemic and we were all stuck in our homes,

    00:12:09.180 --> 00:12:13.160

    so it was a big deal to me to give them not only a pattern,

    00:12:13.900 --> 00:12:15.000

    but an experience.

    00:12:15.800 --> 00:12:19.800

    I am at the point of this illustration where I'm adding in the finishing details

    00:12:20.220 --> 00:12:25.080

    and I saved the golden leaves go around the neck and the tail.

    00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:29.880

    I work from light to dark and so that,

    00:12:29.900 --> 00:12:33.680

    so that I can create the depth for the golden leaves.

    00:12:34.560 --> 00:12:39.560

    I used my sketch as the guide for creating the leaves and the outline for their

    00:12:39.560 --> 00:12:41.680

    shape to carry the leaves through.

    00:12:42.040 --> 00:12:46.560

    I added some leaves to the tail to flow along with the movement of the tail

    00:12:47.060 --> 00:12:51.000

    as this creature was flying through the air. Coming up next,

    00:12:51.220 --> 00:12:55.560

    I'm going to show you how this finished design turned out with the rest of the

    00:12:55.560 --> 00:12:57.000

    illustrations for this pattern,

    00:12:57.470 --> 00:13:00.600

    this illustration took me most of a full day to finish,

    00:13:01.020 --> 00:13:04.560

    so all of this is condensed into a much shorter time-lapse video.

    00:13:05.340 --> 00:13:09.440

    If you want to do something detailed, take your time and enjoy the process.

    00:13:10.300 --> 00:13:15.160

    The fun is in creating and seeing the story in your mind come to life in

    00:13:15.160 --> 00:13:19.680

    front of you, not only for you, but for your clients and their customers.

    00:13:20.460 --> 00:13:24.470

    Here is a closeup of the finished Pegasus in the pattern design.

    00:13:24.810 --> 00:13:29.190

    Now all the illustrated elements came together to tell the story of Olympus

    00:13:29.220 --> 00:13:30.053

    Odyssey.

    00:13:31.240 --> 00:13:35.220

    If you would like to learn more tips about creating feathered wings in

    00:13:35.220 --> 00:13:36.053

    procreate,

    00:13:36.160 --> 00:13:40.900

    you can grab my illustrating wings guide where I go into more detail about my

    00:13:41.140 --> 00:13:42.140

    approach to the wings.

    00:13:42.920 --> 00:13:47.300

    You can find the link to this guide below this video in the description.

    00:13:48.300 --> 00:13:52.700

    Creating the wings was definitely one of my favorite parts of creating this

    00:13:52.740 --> 00:13:53.573

    illustration.

    00:13:55.900 --> 00:13:58.660

    I will be sharing more process videos just like this one,
