drawing Italian ruscus in procreate- episode 7
video - Episode 7
Holding an Italian Ruscus plant in your hand you can see the delicate leaves that make up this lovely plant. It is used in many flower arrangements and wedding bouquets because it makes a wonderful filler or background greenery.
In this video chat episode, I share how this plant started from a simple sketch and then turned into a plant illustration in Procreate using some of my favorite brushes.

Procreate brushes used:
For creating the sketch, I used MaxU Dirty Bold Sharp Brush

00:00:24.780 --> 00:00:28.600
You would like to learn more about the process I use for drawing plants in
00:00:28.600 --> 00:00:29.433
procreate.
00:00:29.640 --> 00:00:32.880
I have a free beginner mini course where I share how to create leaves,
00:00:33.340 --> 00:00:37.920
my tips for sketching plants, and my full list of favorite procreate brushes,
00:00:38.470 --> 00:00:43.440
plus a free download of a favorite brush I created and I use
00:00:43.540 --> 00:00:45.600
all the time, which is my monologue brush.
00:00:46.220 --> 00:00:51.040
It also includes color palettes and three step-by-step illustration lessons too.
00:00:51.620 --> 00:00:53.960
You can find that in the description.
00:00:54.420 --> 00:00:59.240
The real Italian Ruscus plant is a dark cream plant with lots of little
00:00:59.300 --> 00:01:00.280
to medium-sized,
00:01:00.920 --> 00:01:04.720
delicate leaves that cascade around and down the stems.
00:01:05.100 --> 00:01:09.120
It is a beautiful plant and it makes a great background or fill green.
00:01:09.510 --> 00:01:14.320
When used in floral illustration layouts, and even in real floral arrangements,
00:01:14.940 --> 00:01:17.720
you can find them in many different floral bouquets.
00:01:18.300 --> 00:01:20.040
As I'm sketching this plant,
00:01:20.380 --> 00:01:23.120
I'm working out where the leaves will go on the stem,
00:01:23.420 --> 00:01:27.200
and if they alternate or are opposite each other on the stem,
00:01:28.160 --> 00:01:30.720
I want to orient the leaves in a way that adds interest,
00:01:31.100 --> 00:01:35.600
so I'm varying the view of them because when you look at a stem from the side,
00:01:36.060 --> 00:01:37.200
you get different views.
00:01:37.860 --> 00:01:42.560
My favorite way to create leaves is to have a point on the end of the end of the
00:01:42.560 --> 00:01:44.160
leaf, and luckily for me,
00:01:44.350 --> 00:01:48.880
this plant does have pointed leaves and I'm filling in all of the leaf shapes
00:01:48.880 --> 00:01:53.880
with a dark green color. The background color of my canvas is off-white.
00:01:54.540 --> 00:01:56.240
As I change the background color,
00:01:56.460 --> 00:02:00.000
you can see that it softens the look of the leaves too.
00:02:00.580 --> 00:02:04.680
As I finish up the artwork and add a few line details to this plant,
00:02:06.960 --> 00:02:10.880
I will be sharing more process videos, so be sure to subscribe.
00:02:11.250 --> 00:02:12.440
Thank you for watching.
