Christmas Peony Flowers In Procreate - Episode 17
video - Episode 17
In this episode, I am illustrating Christmas Peony flowers in Procreate.
As I started illustrating the flower, the design got too detailed for what I was planning, and I decided to redo the illustration and simplify the details of the Christmas flower.
It is okay to change what you create and adjust as you go.
For this design, I created a single Christmas peony flower and recolored and resized it to create the finished design. So, I only made one detailed flower and modified it to look different. I only sometimes do this because I usually like to have several variations, but for this design, it worked and helped save time in the process.
Creating Christmas Holiday Peony Flowers In Procreate
I also incorporated some filler elements like hypericum berries, western red cedar, and other filler and background greenery elements to round out the design.

00:00:01.135 --> 00:00:03.695
I am Denise Palmer and I am an illustrator,
00:00:03.795 --> 00:00:08.575
artist and surface pattern designer working out of my studio close to the
00:00:08.575 --> 00:00:13.335
Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and botanical plants surround my
00:00:13.535 --> 00:00:14.368
everyday life.
00:00:14.565 --> 00:00:18.535
Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used
00:00:18.535 --> 00:00:23.375
to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and design.
00:00:23.965 --> 00:00:25.575
Welcome to this episode,
00:00:25.995 --> 00:00:29.255
and today we are talking all about Christmas florals.
00:00:30.225 --> 00:00:35.115
Florals are a favorite subject of mine as they are an essential subject to have
00:00:35.215 --> 00:00:39.625
in your portfolio. They can be used for various products,
00:00:39.985 --> 00:00:43.785
occasions, and events that bring meaning and joy to our everyday lives.
00:00:44.075 --> 00:00:45.505
Since it is the holidays,
00:00:45.785 --> 00:00:49.105
I decided to share more about Christmas flowers,
00:00:49.445 --> 00:00:54.385
and this artwork is from a collection of Christmas designs in my portfolio and
00:00:54.385 --> 00:00:57.385
are based on the idea of a sugar plum forest.
00:00:58.205 --> 00:00:59.505
To round out the collection,
00:00:59.745 --> 00:01:03.345
I wanted to have a bright and bold floral design in the collection,
00:01:03.845 --> 00:01:06.145
and these are the flowers that make up the design,
00:01:06.275 --> 00:01:08.225
which I will share at the end of this video,
00:01:08.445 --> 00:01:12.745
so do stay tuned for that to see the finished artwork.
00:01:12.745 --> 00:01:17.705
Okay, so this Peony is starting to get very detailed in my Procreate
00:01:17.705 --> 00:01:21.945
canvas, and it was it was taking on kind of a realistic look,
00:01:22.435 --> 00:01:23.785
which looked great,
00:01:23.925 --> 00:01:27.785
but it was starting to get too detailed for me for this particular design,
00:01:28.325 --> 00:01:31.105
so I decided to go back and simplify the artwork,
00:01:31.325 --> 00:01:34.305
and I like the more simplified version best.
00:01:34.605 --> 00:01:37.025
Before we get too far into this episode,
00:01:37.205 --> 00:01:39.665
if you want to start drawing plants and procreate,
00:01:40.025 --> 00:01:43.305
I have a free beginner mini course all about illustrating leaves,
00:01:43.715 --> 00:01:45.425
which you can find at the link below this video.
00:01:45.425 --> 00:01:50.225
Leaves are the foundation for creating plants and progressing to
00:01:50.225 --> 00:01:50.805
florals,
00:01:50.805 --> 00:01:55.265
so it is a great starting point and a fun way to get to know Procreate.
00:01:55.965 --> 00:01:58.945
In addition to the main focus flower, the peony,
00:01:59.385 --> 00:02:03.665
I created some filler floral elements, and these are hypericum berries.
00:02:04.785 --> 00:02:08.905
Berries are a great filler element because they are interesting and a different
00:02:08.905 --> 00:02:13.505
shape than the flowers, so they create a texture contrast with the flowers.
00:02:14.205 --> 00:02:15.025
For the berries,
00:02:15.025 --> 00:02:19.305
I like to create a cluster and then a single berry that I can move around.
00:02:20.005 --> 00:02:22.985
To also emphasize the holiday feel. To this design,
00:02:23.265 --> 00:02:27.985
I used a filler greenery that is a traditional holiday green called
00:02:27.985 --> 00:02:28.695
western red cedar.
00:02:28.695 --> 00:02:33.385
This plant has little bits and pieces that come off a main
00:02:33.455 --> 00:02:38.425
stem and really adds a textural kind of detail to it
00:02:38.735 --> 00:02:41.065
that has a traditional holiday look.
00:02:41.545 --> 00:02:44.345
I ended up recoloring this and making it a little bit darker.
00:02:44.895 --> 00:02:48.825
Here are the finished florals grouped together with some other background
00:02:48.825 --> 00:02:52.745
greenery and singular leaf elements to round out the artwork.
00:02:53.135 --> 00:02:56.305
This is the same peony flower I created in Procreate,
00:02:56.405 --> 00:03:01.005
and I edited the colors to make it different by adjusting the colors and scaling
00:03:01.105 --> 00:03:04.965
the florals differently so they look a little different in the overall design.
00:03:05.275 --> 00:03:09.565
This is an easy trick to not have to illustrate multiples of the same detailed
00:03:09.585 --> 00:03:13.005
flower if you want to reuse it, instead of creating a new version,
00:03:13.415 --> 00:03:16.005
which is what I did here, and it works for this design.
00:03:16.605 --> 00:03:20.085
I don't always do this because I usually like to create more than one version,
00:03:20.425 --> 00:03:21.765
but for this one it worked.
00:03:22.185 --> 00:03:26.005
Here's the finished design in a repeat pattern with all of the elements.
00:03:26.715 --> 00:03:29.925
This design would work great for products like gift wrap, gift bags,
00:03:30.065 --> 00:03:30.965
and fabrics.
00:03:33.005 --> 00:03:35.725
I will be sharing more process videos just like this one,
00:03:36.265 --> 00:03:40.165
so be sure to subscribe. Thank you for watching!
