Christmas Holiday Mermaid In Procreate - Episode 18

video - Episode 18

Christmas Nutcracker Mermaid In Procreate on the iPad

In today's episode, we are discussing holidays, but with a twist, and creating a Christmas mermaid in Procreate.

I decided to create a nutcracker-inspired mermaid but incorporated details that reflect my tropical environment since I live close to the water and the ocean.

Creating A Christmas Holiday Nutcracker Style Mermaid In Procreate

When location is a big part of what inspires you, it begins to define your style and influence what you create and can give your work a unique look that reflects you as an artist and illustrator.

Try out non-traditional artwork for Christmas and holiday art and color palettes because it is fun to try out new themes and stories to tell for even traditional seasons of the year.

Christmas Holiday Nutcracker Mermaid In Procreate Transcript:

  • 00:00:01.135 --> 00:00:03.695

    I am Denise Palmer and I am an illustrator,

    00:00:03.795 --> 00:00:08.575

    artist and surface pattern designer working out of my studio close to the

    00:00:08.575 --> 00:00:13.335

    Gulf of Mexico where water adventures and botanical plants surround my

    00:00:13.535 --> 00:00:14.368

    everyday life.

    00:00:14.565 --> 00:00:18.535

    Welcome to these video chats where I talk about some of the techniques I've used

    00:00:18.535 --> 00:00:23.375

    to create my artwork and chat about all things illustration, art, and design.

    00:00:23.845 --> 00:00:25.615

    Welcome to today's episode,

    00:00:25.915 --> 00:00:30.015

    and I'm continuing today with the subject of Christmas artwork.

    00:00:30.285 --> 00:00:33.095

    Usually when you think of Christmas, you think of reindeer,

    00:00:33.715 --> 00:00:37.175

    Santas and Christmas trees and traditional holiday colors,

    00:00:37.995 --> 00:00:41.655

    but this artwork in this episode is anything but traditional.

    00:00:41.845 --> 00:00:45.495

    Most of the artwork I have shared in these video chats were commissioned

    00:00:45.495 --> 00:00:46.328

    projects,

    00:00:46.475 --> 00:00:50.615

    but this artwork is something I decided to create to reflect my environment,

    00:00:50.825 --> 00:00:51.658

    which is tropical.

    00:00:52.115 --> 00:00:56.095

    And so I wanted this design to have a tropical holiday theme to it.

    00:00:56.245 --> 00:01:00.975

    This is why I am creating a mermaid with hints of a nutcracker style

    00:01:01.685 --> 00:01:03.135

    with a nutcracker fish,

    00:01:03.665 --> 00:01:08.175

    which you will see at the end of this video in the full design I will share with

    00:01:08.175 --> 00:01:11.935

    you. The color palette is tropical with a bright Christmas undertone,

    00:01:12.195 --> 00:01:17.135

    and there are present stealing crabs and coral inspired Christmas trees to bring

    00:01:17.155 --> 00:01:21.215

    the theme and story to life. I wanted the mermaid to have long,

    00:01:21.345 --> 00:01:24.655

    flowy hair because it is definitely something my daughter would love,

    00:01:25.395 --> 00:01:30.375

    and I gave this mermaid a more boxy look to her mermaid tail and her face

    00:01:30.595 --> 00:01:33.255

    to create a separation between the blocks of color,

    00:01:33.655 --> 00:01:38.335

    I added darker line work to outline the shapes in the body hair and little

    00:01:38.335 --> 00:01:39.168

    details.

    00:01:39.645 --> 00:01:43.815

    When you use line work in the same color range as what you are outlining,

    00:01:44.075 --> 00:01:47.535

    it creates a softer look, but still delivers definition.

    00:01:47.675 --> 00:01:50.135

    It is much softer than using a black outline.

    00:01:50.765 --> 00:01:53.015

    This is my personal preference and style,

    00:01:53.315 --> 00:01:56.015

    and not to say that you cannot use black line work,

    00:01:56.385 --> 00:02:00.375

    black or gray line work can be done really well. I just don't like using it.

    00:02:00.595 --> 00:02:03.135

    So if you haven't tried line work in a darker color,

    00:02:03.395 --> 00:02:05.375

    try it out and see if it fits your style.

    00:02:05.755 --> 00:02:09.055

    Try thinking about non-traditional holiday themes and color palettes,

    00:02:09.055 --> 00:02:13.495

    like a tropical one to create a different look to traditional seasons of the

    00:02:13.495 --> 00:02:16.375

    year. You never know. You may love the new twist on tradition,

    00:02:16.675 --> 00:02:17.895

    and so will your clients.

    00:02:19.975 --> 00:02:22.815

    I will be sharing more process videos just like this one,

    00:02:23.115 --> 00:02:26.775

    so be sure to subscribe. Thank you for watching!
